Gaybo to leave RTÉ lyric fm next year?

Radio and television legend Gay Byrne has indicated he plans to leave RTÉ next year when he turns 80.

The RTÉ lyric fm presenter was speaking at his book launch yesterday and told the Irish Independent: “I would like a bit more time to myself. If I make next August I’ll be 80 years of age, and they tell me I don’t look 80 years of age, but around that time you start thinking that maybe you could do with a little bit more time to yourself and a bit more time to do things.”

His new book, “The Meaning of Life”, contains details of interviews he has done over the years with well known personalities.

Gaybo also hosts television programmes alongside Sunday afternoons 2 till 4pm – the most popular show lyric fm.

But he said he was “not retiring”, adding: “So if I am still able to walk or ride a bike, I can decide to do something else. I don’t have a free day in my diary at the moment.”
