WLR FM Christmas Appeal raises €162,000

This year’s WLRfm Christmas Appeal wrapped up on Saturday December 21st and raised over €162,000.

The appeal was set up in 1979 and in the years subsequent, almost €4.7 million-plus has been raised and returned to the local community and local charities.

Almost 100 events were organised including Waterford’s Biggest On-Air Pub Quiz, a concert of Christmas Music, a truck pull, a boxing night, a Christmas run and a ‘Wear Red to Work day’ where almost 70 Waterford companies wore red to work for the Christmas Appeal.

WLR FM’s Operations Manager Michael Byrne who led the appeal told RadioToday; “The appeal is the highlight of the year for everyone in WLR FM. It really is a team effort. The WLR FM Christmas Appeal is very much part Waterford at Christmas. It’s a huge amount of money to raise and we couldn’t do it without the support of our listeners.”

Walking on Cars, The Heathers and Gavin James all played free concerts in Waterford City centre for the appeal too.
