Cork’s 96FM teams up with local college

Cork’s 96FM and Griffith College have launched an exclusive partnership to train Cork’s future radio stars.

Students on the BA in Journalism at Griffith College’s Cork campus will gain exclusive broadcast training in Cork’s 96FM studios as part of their three-year degree.

“Griffith College Cork students will get the opportunity to work alongside experienced news broadcasters,” said Barry O’Mahony, Head of News at Cork’s 96FM. “In-studio training is vital for any student hoping to make a career in broadcast news media.

“Students will learn about network providers and the role they play in compiling day-to-day radio news bulletins. This is invaluable experience for any budding news reader or reporter,” he said. “96FM welcomes the opportunity to team up with Griffith College in delivering it`s much sought after third-level journalism courses.”

Griffith College is the only third-level institution to offer a degree in journalism in Cork and counts several radio, TV and print personalities among its graduates including ITV’s Laura Whitmore, Newstalk’s Chris Donoghue and UTV Ireland reporter/newsreader Zara King. Barry O’Mahony, Head of News, at Cork’s 96FM, is a key lecturer in radio journalism on the BA in Journalism at Griffith College.

“This is an exclusive opportunity for our students,” Gemma O’Sullivan, head of journalism and media communications at the Cork campus of the national third-level college, said. “It is a testament to Cork’s 96FM’s dedication to journalism and the development of the next generation of Irish radio voices that we are able to offer this great opportunity.

“Griffith has already produced great Irish radio professionals and this partnership brings our students into one of Ireland’s greatest regional broadcasters as part of their degree. We are one of the only faculties in the country to create such a partnership,” she said.
