Former Classic Hits Radio journalist Cara McHugh has joined RTÉ’s news2day team as a presenter and reporter.
Cara is from Boyle in County Roscommon and begins broadcasting today, Monday 31 August, across RTÉ2, the RTÉ News channel and RTÉ Player.
She previously worked as a freelance journalist on local and national stories for the Sligo Weekender newspaper, The Journal.ie and Ireland’s Classic Hits Radio.
Cara studied English and French at UCD, where she was involved with student newspaper The University Observer. After college, she worked as a production runner at RTÉ before moving into freelance journalism.
Speaking about joining news2day, Cara said: “I am so excited to be joining the RTÉ news2day team, which reaches primary school classes from every corner of Ireland!”
She added: “Storytelling was an integral part of my youth, and to be able to do this on a national platform, sharing significant stories with children feels so important.”
Cara joins presenter Cathal Dowd from Wexford, who has been with the programme since September 2025.
