Matt Cooper to pen and perform his own song

Today FM’s Dare to Care fundraiser has turned its attention to presenter Matt Cooper, who has been dared to write and perform a tune.

His programme team and producer Patrick Haughey have come up with the idea of daring Matt, and revealed the dare live on The Last Word: “You love writing, you love music, and you love live gigs…it’s marrying the things that you are good at, I don’t think I’m being unfair here, Matt.”

Not only will he write a song from scratch, Matt will then perform his masterpiece in front of a live audience.

Commenting on his dare, Matt Cooper said: “Singing is going to be a challenge enough in itself, made worse by performing in front of an audience, but I think I would be far happier if I was doing a well known, popular song. I’m going to get judged on the double and I can only imagine the analysis that’s going to be done of any lyrics I pen. I know the cause is good but the challenge is a bit different to what I expected and more too.”

Following on from its Shave or Dye campaign which raised over €7million for the Irish Cancer Society, Today FM presenters and listeners have committed to taking on all sorts of dares to raise funds for cancer services and will continue to do so throughout September.

Within the next week, Today FM presenters such as Anton Savage, Dermot & Dave, Fergal D’Arcy and Louise Duffy will be forced to reveal what they’re prepared to do for ‘Dare to Care’.

On Friday last, Ian Dempsey gave into listener demands and agreed to get his first ever tattoo for Dare to Care – but only if €25,000 is raised for The Irish Cancer Society.
