A radio documentary broadcast on Tipp FM recently went in search of Ernest Edward Thomas.
The one hour programme contained new evidence which seriously questions that Corporal E. Thomas of the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards was from Co Tipperary.
It has been publicised the world over that the 1st shot fired by the British army at the western front during WW1 came from the rifle of a Corporal E. Thomas on August 22nd 1914.
The documentary was presented, produced and researched by Tom Hurley after claims in some Irish newspapers and books over the years that this man actually came from Nenagh, Co Tipperary. “This documentary is the story of my journey to discover more about Thomas, his Nenagh roots and tell his story. However from the start the figure proved to be highly elusive and I encountered many twists and turns along the way,” says Tom.
The documentary is available to listen online here.
