Splac, Newstalk’s Irish language programme has won the inaugural Commercial Radio Programme of the Year Award at this year’s Gradam Cumarsáide an tOireachtas.
The winners were announced at a ceremony in the Citywest Hotel on Wednesday October 30th.
The award celebrates the diversity, creativity and broadcasting ability of Irish language broadcasters on independent radio stations.
IBI Executive Director Lisa Ní Choisdealbha told RadioToday: “The introduction of a Commercial Radio Irish Language Award as part of An tOireachtas Media Awards is a welcome recognition of the dedication of broadcasters and radio stations to the Irish language.
“Tá an duais seo tuilte go mór ag Splanc. Is sampla iontach é de clár shiamsúil, d’árd-chaighdeán do mhuintir na tíre, iad siúd atá suim acu in ár dteanga, agus níos tabhachtaí fós iad siúd atá imithe ón dteanga ach atá ag lorg slí ar ais.
“Tréaslaim leis an láithreoir Cuán Ó Flatharta agus an léiritheoir Jess Kelly as ucht an Gradam a thógaint leo agus níl aon cheist ach go gcoinneoidh siad ag borradh agus ag fás as seo amach”
The Media Awards, which are presented annually, are recognised as a mark of excellence in Irish language broadcasting. In addition to the new Commercial Radio category there is also a Community Radio category added this year. The two new categories are sponsored by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI).
