Seán Kyne, TD, Minister for the Gaeltacht, has launched a special Raidió Rí-Rá FM broadcast in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick.
The special broadcast is taking place this week and two new studios for the station have been opened in Cork and Galway.
Sean Kyne said: “I am delighted to launch this week’s FM service on Raidió Rí-Rá and also to officially open the two new studios at Cork and Galway. It is evident that the station is going from strength to strength each year and this is a very significant step for the station and I am delighted, as Minister of State, and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht is also delighted to continue to provide funding for Raidió Rí-Rá.
“We understand that Raidió Rí-Rá provides an excellent Irish language radio service for young people and that the station provides an opportunity for many people to gain broadcasting experience.”
Niamh Ní Chróinin, Manager of Raidió Rí-Rá, said: “We are delighted that we can enhance the service that we provide to the community, especially for young people, with the launch of our two new radio studios in Cork, with the support of Gael Taca, and in Galway, with the support of Techspace and Raidió na dTreabh.
“Not only are we providing a fantastic radio service to the public but we will also provide opportunities for students and others in the different cities to experience working with the media.
“We are very grateful to Minister for the Gaeltacht, Seán Kyne, TD, for launching the special FM broadcast and the two new stations today. We are also grateful for his and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht’s continued support for the development of the station”.
Julian de Spáinn, Secretary of Raidió Rí-Rá, added: “It is the aim of Raidió Rí-Rá to make our service available on FM throughout the country on a full-time basis and we are looking for support from the Government and from all political parties to achieve this. This would be massively helpful to promote Irish and in encouraging young people to use it more.”
