A Documentary On One production from RTÉ Radio 1 has won first prize in the International Radio Award at the 65th Premios Ondas Awards in Spain.
For more than six decades the Premios Ondas, Spain’s most long-standing and prestigious radio and television awards, has attracted entries from across the world. This year, more than 300 entries competed across radio, TV and music.
The winning Documentary On One production, titled ‘In Shame, Love, In Shame’, was produced by Conor Keane and Liam O’Brien, Series Producer of the Documentary On One and Conor Keane narrated. The Premios Ondas jury cited that “they set great store by the strength of a story which tells of major injustices suffered by the same Irish family over three generations at the hands of the church in a small community in the south west of Ireland.” The documentary told the story of Peggy and Breda McCarthy from Listowel, Co. Kerry.
Head of RTÉ Radio 1 Tom McGuire said: “In 1990 in a radio studio in Kerry I listened to the late Sean McCarthy sing this song from the heart of his family and that moment is revisited for me here. ‘In Shame Love, In Shame’ combines the storytelling excellence of Conor Keane and documentary experience of Liam O’Brien to relate a story of a seminal moment in the relationship between a church and its community”.
The Premios Ondas awards ceremony will take place at the Liceau Opera House on Las Ramblas, Barcelona on November 14th in front of a capacity audience of 2,500 attendees.
Also, as a direct result of this award-winning documentary (In Shame, Love, In Shame), Kerry County Council and the Mayor of Kerry, in an unprecedented move, issued a formal apology to both Peggy and Breda McCarthy and the entire wider McCarthy family.
