Tom McGuire takes over as Head of Radio 1

Tom McGuire is to officially take charge at RTÉ Radio 1, after six months as Acting Head of the national station.

He’s the replacement for Jim Jennings who moved on to be Managing Director, RTÉ Radio in the summer after Clare Duignan decided not to renew her contract.

Tom’s broadcasting career began with the foundation of Radio Kerry in 1990. He moved to RTÉ Cork three years later, where he was part of the Nationwide team. He trained as a radio producer and moved to the radio centre in Donnybrook as an Editor in 1999. For the past decade, Tom has had editorial responsibility for most of Radio 1’s flagship programmes. The Longford native and Westmeath resident was for a number of years Regional Editor at the station.

Tom McGuire says: “After a generation in broadcasting, it is a privilege to be entrusted with the responsibility to lead Ireland’s biggest radio station at a time when the broadcasting environment is at its most competitive and exciting. I know that the brilliant team of presenters, programme makers and support staff at RTÉ Radio 1 will build on the success it has achieved under the leadership of Jim Jennings.”

Speaking of Mr. McGuire’s appointment Jim Jennings said: “Tom brings a wealth of experience to a key role in RTÉ. Radio 1 will benefit from Tom’s knowledge and passion for radio and I look forward to working with him to maintain Radio 1’s position as the most listened to radio station in the country.”
