Sunshine 106.8 has taken a broadcast slot previously used by Today FM inside the Dublin Port Tunnel.
From today, Sunshine is available to listeners driving through the tunnel instead of losing the signal whilst going underground.
Radio Nova, which has been campaigning to be included on the broadcast system along with Classic Hits 4FM and Sunshine, has invited Today FM to join it in its fight to be part of the line-up. There are only seven positions available in the 4.5km tunnel, and Nova announced plans last year to place an injunction against Transport Infrastructure Ireland, the operators of the tunnel, to update its technology to allow more stations.
Speaking to RadioToday, Sean Ashmore, Sunshine 106.8 CEO said: “We’re delighted to launch these additional facilities to extend the coverage and reach of the service and make it easier to listen across Dublin.”
A message on Sunshine’s website says: “We’re delighted to announce that we’ve just switched on new coverage for in-car reception in both the Northbound and Southbound bores of the Dublin Tunnel – Sunshine 106.8 now forms part of the emergency broadcast system that is operated by the Dublin Tunnel.”
In addition, Sunshine 106.8 is now broadcasting on a new frequency in the general Balbriggan area in north County Dublin. As part of newly installed additional transmission facilities, Sunshine 106.8 is also available on 106.6FM in the area.
