C103 presenter speaks out over post office cutbacks

Patricia Messinger, host of C103’s Cork Today for the past 25 years, fired back at a caller who suggested that rural post offices should be closed to save the country’s coffer.

Her enraged comments came as part of a discussion about how austerity has affected people’s day to day lives.

Broadcasting to Cork City and County, the show has regularly been involved in campaigns to highlight the detrimental effects of cutbacks and closures on those living in isolated rural areas.

The conversation switched to saving facilities in many towns and villages across Cork County such as local banks, shops and post offices as it emerged that postmasters in rural post offices were to receive pay cuts.

Caller Pat called the programme. He felt that people need to move with the times and that such services cost the country too much.

As this clip clearly shows, his views were too much for the normally restrained presenter!
